Each April 9 was considered by Canadian government as a remembrance day of Canadian Corps who dead or having relatedness during the First World War Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Historically, in 2003, Canadian Government announced that April 9 will be considered Vimy Ridge Day to honor and remember the battle which is a part of First World War Battle. Vimy Ridge name comes from a place in France and the war happened in 1917. According to Vimy Ridge Day law, in that day flags in Peace Tower, Parliament Hill and Ottawa will be lowered to half height. Of course there are other ceremonies and representative small events involved in that day.  When we look at the battle, this war importance regarding it was first time to four area of Canadian people got together as a platoon. Then they attended to 5th British Infantry Division to reinforce artillery, engineer and labor units. They were supported by 24th British division which is well-known name regarding specialty about north Souchez river. On April 9 at 5:30, every part of battalion began to attack to enemy. They almost 90 meters took in each three minutes. 5th Infantry Division and 24th British Division had very serious troubles during this attack and even they were late they could have captured their first objective and provide security in Les Tilleuls. Then on April 10, German soldiers were started to counter attack at 11:00 a.m. and in about 15 hours later 24th British Division and Canadian Crops could find enough power to bring end of battle in 12 April. 24th British Division and Canadian Corps lost 3589 soldier, had 7004 wounded; German Sixth Army had unnumbered people of death and wounded soldier and also their about 4000 soldiers became prisoners of war. After war, the highest military medal was given to British and Commonwealth members.

In Vimy Ridge Day, regarding stores, shopping centers, public services are run by government according to their regular calendar. That is there is no holiday for that day. However, to remember and honor people of Vimy Ridge in schools’ classes include historical events about First World War and they process how is important Canadian Corps in the war. Out of schools, people tend to go to museums such as Canadian War Museum and attend special activities for that day. For example people telling stories about the war, representations about important moments of war and also lots of people wear Vimy pins, hold Canadian Flag or First World War uniforms to refer, remember and honor Vimy Ridge Day on April 9.
