Each October 9 is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day by Canadian people. This is an officially federal holiday, so each people in Canada make a day off in second Monday of October.

According to some history experts, Thanksgiving Day based on North America traditions and the first celebration was in 1578. At this point, Martin Frobisher is the famous name because of he was the leader of the first voyage which was exploring Canadian waters in 1500’s. After they landed in Nunavut, they could not create a settlement because they lose their ships which are including building materials. Then, French explorer Samuel de Champlain arrived this lands in 1604 and after they settled, to honor their accomplishment and thanks for god they share their food with neighbors and also held feasts.

After Seven Years’ War in 1763, people from Halifax organized a special Thanksgiving Day and then although it was continued to organizing, it was not celebrated each year by people. After American Revolution, American refugees brought some new tradition in Canada such as turkey, squash and pumpkin. The first time Thanksgiving Day was officially announced as a national holiday in 1879. Then, it started to celebrate in each year. After the First World War, even Thanksgiving Day and Armistice Day were celebrated in same day, ten years later they were separated from each other and started to celebrate in different dates and Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day. In 1957, the Parliament of Canada fixed the celebration date on second Monday of October.

In this day, majority of people visit their family and friends and even they live far from them, they spent effort to come close their relatives. Special meals are prepared such as roasted turkey and serviced on a big table which is surrounded by family people. Thanksgiving Day also is a good day to give autumn break for people. Most of them also take a short trip in province or near locations regarding trekking, mountain bike, picnics of course weather is suitable. Moreover, fishing and watching Canadian Football league are the very popular activities during holiday of Thanksgiving Day.

Because it is a national holiday, on October 9, schools, stores and shopping malls are closed, so people give an off day during Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Regarding governmental services, public transportation runs according to reduced schedule that is number of working busses or metros are decreased by government. Also, post offices are closed in this day but some private businesses may give services as regular as to community.
