National Tartan Day – April 6

Tartan Day comes from Scottish bonds and it is celebrating around World in different countries such as United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia etc. Shortly, it is a day which refers to Scottish diaspore in different countries.

Approximately 6 million people who are Scottish around United States. A small group of them in New York in 1982 organized an event about Tartan Day and then in 1998 as a coalition of Scottish Americans they supported to Senator Trent Lott. After their successful lobby event, senator became chosen ones and April 6 became National Tartan Day in United States. The law passed with 155 vote on March 20 in 1998. Also, Scottish group take the title of Founding Fathers of America. Also according to idea behind the day, Scottish people in past provide lots of benefit in developing process of human rights and democracy, so they are related with creating modern world. After 2004, a group Scottish-American foundations and National Tartan Day Committee worked in United States House of Representative to give a proclamation about National Tartan Day. After 4 years later, created a campaign to send thousands of letter to United States’ President who is George W. Bush and want him to give a proclamation about National Tartan Day, so on April 4 in 2008 he signed the proclamation to make April 6 National Tartan Day. Then about eight thousands of people got together with their pipers and drummers to walk in New York’s streets to celebrate this win. This was also a celebration for Scotland and Scottish history in United States. The first time in 2005, Scotland send William Wallace’s sword to New York in April 6 National Tartan Day. The other places from New York, there is also people getting around and celebrate this day in festivals and events. The Missouri Tartan Day Festival is the one of the most famous among them. In addition, in Jefferson City, Kansas City are another places where National Tartan Day is celebrating in detail. Beside of festivals, in Washington DC and Baltimore Scottish people organize receptions for congressmen of United States.

In National Tartan Day, people attend festivals to celebrate this day with pipe bands, highland dancing and sport events and also lots of demonstration which are based on Scottish culture. Even it is a national holiday, in National Tartan Day schools are kept open by government. Shops, shopping work in their regular time it can be said that there is almost no holiday for all country, so governmental services such public transportation and post office also open during day.
