Good Friday refers to crucifixion of Jesus Christ and in following week is considered a part of Paschal Triduum in Easter Sunday. This day also well-known in names of Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday. Good Friday is a very important day in Christianity because this day refers to sacrifice and feeling sorrow for God and for his path. Christians remember Jesus’s faith and trust for God and how he showed courage to face with lots of pain. In that day lots of events are organized by churches, foundations and local communities. For example, triumphal return of Jesus to Jerusalem, washing to the disciples’ feet by Jesus, Last Supper on the Maundy Thursday etc.
Moreover, Good Friday, Canadian Christians both going churches regularly or not, attend several kind church activities in that day because this day are considered lament day and they want to pray offer their strong beliefs to God. Mostly, they wear black, gray and purple cloths and also carry big crosses. Also candles are very significant parts of these events. Churches are decorated with candles by members of church. In addition, Catholics Christians have fast in a part of day in Good Friday on April 14. Furthermore, hot and fresh cross cakes are very common in this day. Cakes are prepared like a bread which includes many different ingredients such as dried fruits, raisins etc. Then the face of the cake is signed by a cross symbol and covered with sugar surface. Those cross cakes are consumed with butter or toasted by people.
Good Friday is also a national holiday for all Canada except Quebec, so people get a chance to give spring break and make short visits or travels both around country or abroad. Governmental services also give a break these days. For example, public busses work in a special schedule which is different from regular one and there are almost no busses or rail in Canada. Also, majority of post offices are closed on April 14 but some of them continue to work to give post services to people.
Regarding all activities on April 14, Good Friday is a very important day for Canadian Christians. People get together to share they beliefs with others, create strong bonds regarding Christianity, remember Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and pray for setting food in holy way of God.
