In Canadian province of British Columbia, each the first Monday of August is celebrated as British Columbia Day since years. In this day, people come together and attend several different activities around all province.

As a province British Columbia has a very deep and culturally rich historical background which is based on indigenous people and their language and culture. There are almost 200 different indigenous nations which are living in province. In 1600’s, English people explored the land in first time. Then Spanish sailor Juan Jose Perez Hernandez create first written documentary about British Columbian region in middle of 1700’s. In 1778, James Cook, who is English explorer and traveler, reached the land and started to settlement process. Then in 1850’s, the first gold resources were founded by people and then The British Colonial Office take a step and interfered to situation by sending more colonizers to land. After that, the land was named Colony of British Columbia and it was joined to British Colony in 1858. About 20 years later in 1871, the colony participated to Canada as Sixth Province.

In British Columbia Day, people generally try to use this long weekend to take a short holiday around province or in country. They visit places which offer very beautiful scenes or a peaceful environment beyond city life. Camping, trekking, mountain bike or canoe tours are very popular among people living in British Columbia. In addition, because August 7 is the sign of beginning of summer so majority of people tend to put together their vacation and British Columbia Day holiday to take long trips around world. Also, in this day variety of events are organized by people and governmental organizations which are based on traditional cousins and cultural hand-made crafts, sports competitions. Moreover, in this celebration events concerts, traditional scenes and historical animations take an important place.

Because it is a statutory holiday, stores, shopping centers are generally closed in British Columbia Day. Governmental post offices are closed; private shipping business are may open according to their owners. Public transportation is giving importance to deal with huge demand of celebration points regarding carrying citizens to that places.
